NME Shockwaves Award Tour

Leeds’ 02 Academy hosted the NME Shockwaves Award Tour on Sunday 7th February. This was my first time with a photopass at an Academy Venue and was really nervous! Three songs, no flash. I’m used to shooting without restriction in my usual venues so these rules proved quite a challenge but the night as a whole was a great learning experience and I look forward to getting back there sooner, rather than later.

Headliners on the night were The Maccabees with support from Bombay Bicycle Club, The Big Pink and The Drums.

I shot the show on behalf of Push to Fire who will shortly have a full review accompanied by an interview with the Maccabees!

MELT presents Late of the Pier

York’s Fibbers hosts Late of the Pier for an amazing DJ set during thier “MELT” club night.

An opportunity for me to shoot something outside of the norm and focus on documenting the social side of an event for the first time.

“The Original Indie-Electro Dance and Disco present:

LATE OF THE PIER.

The boys will be performing a very special DJ set for us, in what will be only their second performance in the last six months.

Defining the Indie Electro sound with tunes like ‘Focker’, ‘The Bears are Coming’, ‘Hearbeat’ and ‘Broken’, the Nottingham Four Piece received acclaim throughout the music industry. This came none-the-more-so from Electro stalwarts, with big remixes from Boys Noize and Erol Alkan smashing dance floors across the UK.

Now coming to Fibbers, Late of the Pier will perform a secret DJ set, right in the middle of MELT, our indie-electro club night.

Iglu & Hartly headline York’s Fibbers with support from New Politics and Dead Rebellion.

Words by Aimee Taylor

Californian popsters Iglu & Hartly made an impressive stop-off at York on their 2010 UK tour, introducing brand spanking new songs on a night when their synth-driven sound was greatly welcomed by the Fibbers crowd.

The venue was filled with an electric atmosphere, the fans anticipating their well-known anthem, and of course the band saved the best for last. Their energy was bright and bouncy throughout a staggering 13-song set, the highlight being In This City, when the noise was amazing and there was a real buzz.

In support were Dead Rebellion, a hip hop/electronica band with a decent and very cool sound. Their set was energetic but controlled and they delivered a great performance and some quality music. Plugging their upcoming headline gig in February, the crowd cheered in excitement.

Further support came from New Politics, an indie-rock band from the USA that spewed talent, passion and fun. New Politics gave something different to the York audience: beat boxing, break dancing and American charm. The pint-sized lead singer thrust himself around the stage and entertained the crowd while showcasing some genius music.

Iglu & Hartly and their support acts put on a real show at Fibbers and the gig was one of the best that has been staged in York for a very long time. Iglu & Hartly brought something unique and rare with them and we hope that they visit us again soon.

BBC Introducing

January 21st at The Duchess

Words from www.theduchessyork.co.uk

Deep in the bowels of BBC Radio York, there’s been rumblings for many years. Great bands, stunning live sessions and an ethic of getting some, frankly, bloody great music out there. That’s all well and good, but it ain’t live – and the penny has dropped in Bootham Towers courtesy Mr Matt Seymour, music champ, prolific Twitterer and man of enthusiastically eclectic taste. From Overreact’s angular indie-punk clatter inspired by Tokyo Police Club. From Julianne Moore’s Polyphonic Spree with synths to the jazz/soul/trip-hop of Alvin Purple; and the “dark, melodic, odd-ball indie” hinting at Bloc Party, Editors and Kate Bush of Hungry Ghosts – a terrific night is in store and all recorded for posterity and future broadcast.

Her Name is Calla

Her Name is Calla are a fantastic post-rock band I un-officially shot at Brainwash Festival IV in Leeds last November. Recently I was so happy to hear they wanted to use one of my shots from the day as part of a new release they had coming out!

Well that release is now available to pre-order, two versions one limited to 100 and the other limited to 200, and to be honest, it looks to be a gorgeous collectors piece, even before you get to the “Premium Quality Band Pic” bearing my image!

More information on the release and pre-order is available here

Lost From Atlas Album Launch

Fibbers, York, 9th January 2010.

My first gig of the new year brings me to Fibbers for Lost From Atlas’ album launch.

LFA are a 3 piece progressive / post rock band from York featuring Orlando Lloyd on bass, Danny Gallagher on guitar and Liam Ledgeway on drums. Fibbers was very busy, testament to the quality of the bands on display. ‘Atlas set the stage out with a unique drummer to the front layout, the novelty of this soon wore off as I felt it unbalanced the view slightly as Danny, perhaps the most energetic, was far from the front in a corner. Their positioning didn’t however take anything away from the music, the set of emotive, guitar heavy songs and powerful bass led soundscapes flew past all too quickly building tension and awe as they passed.

Much screaming (from male and female fans!) was to be heard part way through as Danny whipped off his shirt, discreetly advertising the album with huge black letters across his chest followed by that well known, sales inducing word “BOOM”.

Thier Myspace can be found Here and the blog here.

Lost From Atlas’ merchandise, including the new album (only £6!) can be found here.

Supporting tonight were Littlemores, Swimwear Juniors and Tom Welbrock, a solo Pianist who opened his set with a piece from Halo, awesome. Swimwear Juniors were a surprise, last minute step in to cover the snow bound Suprise Fire. Swimwear Juniors broke up around eight months ago after winning York’s 2009 Battle of the Bands, so this was probably thier last gig then? Littlemores debuted some new material in a well received eight song set, including a cover of The Clash’s “Guns of Brixton”.
